Keyboard and Touchpad on the Lenovo Yoga 7i

Aside from their flat surface, the Yoga 7i’s keycaps have the same unique curved bottom shape as what you’ll find on a ThinkPad, which not only looks slick but also gives your fingers more grip when navigating the keyboard. This made touch-typing easy, and I regularly scored 80 words per minute on 10fastfingers.com, which is my average.
During these typing tests, I found the travel distance to be comfortable and felt cushiony rather than bottoming out.
In contrast to its excellent keyboard, the Yoga’s precision touchpad felt lacking. While it registered multitouch input well and had a comfortable amount of friction, its small footprint made it feel cramped. When making large, sweeping motions across the laptop’s whole screen, I usually had to lift my finger off the touchpad a few times to finish.

The gargantuan 16-inch display is one of the biggest draws of the Lenovo Yoga 7i 16 (Gen 
and will undoubtedly appeal to many people who find the more common 13-14-inch size too cramped. I had hoped when reviewing this device that the display’s quality would be a good fit for its size, but that’s unfortunately not the case. While the Yoga 7i 16 screen is serviceable, I wouldn’t describe it as “pleasant,” and it’s nowhere near “great.”
Right off the bat, you can tell that the Yoga 7i 16’s display looks flat. Colors are washed out, and it’s hard to find any semblance of vibrancy. Testing the display’s color gamut with SpyderX reveals a scant 67% of sRGB and 50% of P3, so certainly don’t opt for this laptop if color reproduction or accuracy is important to you. Lenovo rates the Yoga 7i 16 for up to 300nits of brightness, which is accurate… But as you’ll see below, brightness is still strange on this device.

See the issue? Yeah, 0% brightness on the Yoga 7i 16 is literally zero percent. There’s no brightness at all because the display completely turns off. The laptop is on and useable, but the display doesn’t display, well, anything! I do not know why this is the case or if it’s intentional, but it’s odd. The Yoga 7i 16’s display is also incredibly dim up until about 70%. It’s good that the display gets so dim for when you’re working in the dark (and the contrast is pretty good), but most of the time, you’ll be sitting at 80-100% brightness just to use the laptop.

There are good things to say about the Yoga 7i 16’s display. Viewing angles are solid, and the white balance is comfortable. It doesn’t stray too far toward blue or yellow, there’s minimal light bleed, and Lenovo chose the right aspect ratio (the resolution is also plenty sharp). It’s just not fun to look at, though, and it’s immediately noticeable compared to any other screen I have at my disposal. While there’s technically Dolby Vision support, this screen doesn’t get bright or colorful enough for it ever to matter. It’s a below-average screen, and that’s a shame. If you’re not stressed about color accuracy or having the best possible media consumption experience, though, the Yoga 7i 16’s display isn’t bad… It’s functional.
I wish I had been able to test the higher resolution, brighter display available in some Yoga 7i 16 configurations to see if it avoids these pitfalls because I’d like to say if I can recommend those configurations to people who need a good display. Unfortunately, all I can say is that it looks better on paper.

Hardware and Design
The Lenovo Yoga 7 Gen 8 review unit came in this Tidal teal colour but it was also announced in Storm grey if you want something a little more sedate though.
The build quality is good. The aluminium shell feels premium and well put together but the Yoga 360° hinge is the star of the show. It works well, moving easily or holding position when needed through Laptop, Tablet, Tent and Stand modes.
Opening the Yoga 7 is easy in laptop mode thanks to a small lip protruding from the top of the display, this lip also means there’s more room above the display to house the FullHD resolution webcam which is Windows Hello compatible and also comes with a privacy shutter.
There’s not a lot of bezel at the sides of the 14-inch OLED display and the bottom and top aren’t hugely noticeable. They do however give you a bit of breathing room when holding it in tablet mode so you can avoid accidental touches.
Operating in those four modes, of course it’s a touch display and at up to 400 nits it’s bright too, even when working in bright sunlight. It’s FullHD+ (1920×1200) resolution in 16:10 aspect ratio and works well in tablet and laptop modes (and those in between).
In terms of ports, the Yoga 7 includes both USB Type-A and Type-C ports making it easy to connect peripherals. The USB Type C ports are Thunderbolt 4, though are both on the left hand side making it inconvenient to charge if your outlet is on the right. The Thunderbolt 4 ports handle high-speed data transfer and video out, but you also have a HDMI 1.4 connector for more options. Finally there’s a 3.5mm audio jack as well as a microSD card slot which should make it easy to transfer files.
The 6-row keyboard is backlit and has just the right of travel to make typing for long periods enjoyable. The keyboard is bracketed either end by Dolby Atmos optimised 2W speakers which produce a decent quality sound when watching movies.
Beneath the keyboard is the buttonless touchpad with a smooth, glass-like surface. It supports multi touch and is quite responsive. There is a stylus included in the box which works well with the touch display and makes any fine editing, writing or drawing easy work.
Performance
The 8th gen Yoga 7 is powered by a 13th Gen Intel Core i7-1360P processor with Iris Xe graphics. There’s 16GB of DDR5 RAM installed and a 1TB M.2 SSD.
Overall it’s a good spec for a laptop for home, school or business work. You can zip between surfing the web, Google Docs or office or watch some videos, apps and browsers load quickly. Some of the Adobe apps were a little slow to load, but tended to be fine once loaded correctly.
There are limitations though, and thanks to the underwhelming Iris Xe graphics gaming is definitely one of those limitations. Loading in Cyberpunk 2077 I was lucky to hit 15fps, with an average around 10fps even on the lowest settings. Sons of the Forest too was disappointing with a similar frame-rate on its lowest settings.
For those a fan of benchmarks I ran it through 3DMark and here’s how it went.
Battery
The Yoga 7 includes a 4-cell 71 Wh Li-Ion battery and comes with an included 65W USB Type-C charger.
The Yoga 7 battery life is good, clocking in around 9-10 hours of battery life on average for me. Most of my work is done online in Google Docs, as well as surfing the web, but I do occasionally use Premiere and other apps.
Charging is easy and convenient on the Yoga 7, with the 65W USB Type-C charging decently fast, though a 100W option would be nicer. There’s no ‘FastCharge’ on the laptop, so you’ll get around 20% battery from a 15min charge, and just under 40% with a half hour charge with a full charge taking a bit over 90 minutes.

The Yoga 7i’s full keyboard spans most of the deck’s width with a luminous LED backlight, offering additional quick keys alongside a number pad. Beyond obvious keys that modify brightness or volume levels, other functionalities include opening a calculator, returning to the lock screen, swapping tabs, toggling airplane mode, projecting the display, taking a snapshot, and access to Lenovo Smart Key (which can be bound to do whatever you want).

I took the 10fastfingers.com test and achieved 108 words per minute at an accuracy of 96%. While this is less than the 117 words per minute at an accuracy of 97% I get on my mechanical keyboard, I still enjoyed typing on the Lenovo nonetheless. I was especially impressed by how clicky its keys were, as I both felt and heard its tactile clacks while tapping away during the test.
The 5.3 x 3.2-inch trackpad is nowhere near as satisfying. It lacks traction and often resulted in my fingers coming to an abrupt halt while opening files and browsing web pages. At the very least, a majority of the trackpad is clickable — just a small portion at the top being unusable. Touchpad gestures performed well, but the sluggishness of the trackpad made it feel slow.

The Yoga 7i has the same keyboard as most Yogas. Personally, I find it a bit shallow, and the mechanism is a bit mushy compared to more precise switches on laptops like the HP Spectre x360 13, the Dell XPS 13, and the Magic Keyboard on the newest MacBooks. The Yoga 9i sports a new set of switches that add a great deal of precision to every keystroke — and that’s missed here. The keys are large and nicely sculpted, though, with good spacing.
The touchpad is nicely sized given the available space, and it’s a Microsoft Precision touchpad with a responsive and precise feel. Windows 10 multitouch gestures are well-supported, but I did find the click to be a little too loud. The touch display is responsive and precise as well, giving you flexibility in controlling your cursor, tapping buttons, and scrolling through long webpages. While the display supports the $100 Lenovo active pen, that accessory is not included in the box.
Windows 10 Hello support is provided by a fingerprint reader that’s accurate and responds quickly. I had no issues logging in without using a password.

Features, Ergonomics and Design
The Lenovo Yoga 7i looks like a high-quality, pearl-finish, corporate-grey laptop. Its Lenovo and Yoga logos won’t trouble any stuffy C-Suite boardrooms and it feels rigid and high-quality despite its plastic shell.
Opening it up reveals the bright (400-nit), thin-bezeled, 16-inch, glossy, UHD, IPS touchscreen with its 2,560 x 1,600 resolution. It displays a large, crisp and clear, bright Windows Desktop that’s great for all kinds of office work.
The Lenovo Yoga 7i is EVO-certified by Intel.
Multimedia exhibits good contrast with details showing up in bright and dark areas alike. However, true blacks are a smidge washed out. Colour transitions are mostly very smooth with banding only popping up occasionally. Monochromatic gradients are (impressively) similar, though they do tend to get more blocky more often. It’s generally very good for multimedia, though.
The Lenovo Yoga 7i’s screen has a 60Hz refresh rate but the pixel response time is faster than other business-oriented laptops. It’s not good for fast-moving gaming, but some slower-moving casual games will be displayed acceptably.
Although the Lenovo Yoga 7i has a glossy display, we forgot about that most of the time and it really only became an issue when displaying very dark content: it’s impressive at banishing reflections.
Viewing angles are reduced as normal for a business laptop, but not so much that it’s unusable as a tablet. Also, despite there being some obvious reflections on the dark, glossy screen, it’s the the black mirror of some rivals.
Folding the screen 360-degrees converts the Lenovo Yoga 7i into a tablet. The excellent hinge keeps everything together and you’re provided with a large, responsive touchscreen that adds a very different dimension to regular laptops’ usability.
It’s hard to make out the screen from this angle, but the Lenovo Yoga 7i, in tablet mode, is bright and clear otherwise.
It also comes with a basic stylus but you can upgrade this to the Lenovo Precision Pen (Gen 2) for an extra $60. Lenovo says of it, “The Lenovo Digital Pen 2 improves on the design and functionality of its remarkably popular predecessor. Adding a plastic front cap for enhanced comfort, an elastomer pen tip for precision and an extended battery offering double the run time. Taking notes, signing documents, editing photos and sketching has never been this easy.”
There’s a bit of backlight bleed which annoys some people. But, it doesn’t make any meaningful difference to performance.
Above the screen is an impressive Full HD webcam which is Windows Hello-compatible and doesn’t get too grainy in low light. The microphone array is also very good at capturing clean audio in noisy environments.
We had concerns about the Lenovo Yoga 7i’s keyboard as a previous convertible Yoga we reviewed had a very harsh keyboard that hurt our fingers. The Lenovo Yoga 7i’s keyboard is accurate, low-travel and firm but it’s not as harsh as it’s predecessor. Still, if you’re planning on regularly typing for extended periods on this laptop, it could still become wearying.

There are often compromises to a keyboard and trackpad when a laptop gets twisted into a convertible because the sensitive keys and trackpad must double as a solid base or hand-grip.
There’s a usable (reduced-width) number pad but the up-and-down arrow keys are annoyingly squished, half-height models.
The trackpad is large, smooth and accurate. Its buttons are firm but still comfortable and accurate to use.
The speakers are decent, offering a bit of bass, acceptable volume and good fidelity.
All in all, the Lenovo Yoga 7i is packed full of features and very usable. But, we’re a little concerned for ardent typists.

If you’ve ever used or held a Lenovo Yoga device, you won’t be surprised by the Yoga 7i 16 shown here. Encased in an all-aluminum chassis, this laptop trades the lightweight plastic of other laptops for a sturdy, cool-to-the-touch feel. It’s reassuring, although the resulting weight means this isn’t going to be the easiest laptop to lug around in a bag all day (especially true with the 16-inch model I reviewed).
Lenovo has thought about the details, though, resulting in a nicely-designed mid-range laptop. The edges of the chassis are nicely curved for a more comfortable hold when using the laptop’s touchscreen. A solid array of ports are smartly arranged on either side of the device, including an external power button that’s easily accessible even when in tablet mode. Speakers are positioned above the display to make room for the comfortable keyboard, shrunken number pad, and massive touchpad. A lip above the display houses the camera and physical camera shutter and makes it easy to open the laptop.
Lenovo also makes good use of space, with the thin bezels ensuring this 16-inch display fits into the chassis of older 15-inch devices. While the laptop is overall pretty thin, there’s still plenty of room for an HDMI port, two USB Type-C Thunderbolt 4 ports (one of which is used for quick charging), two USB Type-A ports, and even a microSD card slot (sorry, no full-sized SD card slot this time around). You also get a fingerprint sensor embedded below the number pad, and the webcam does support Windows Hello facial recognition with an included IR sensor. Lenovo really nailed all the basics.
The only concern I had during my time with the Yoga 7i 16 is with its hinge. While it’s very functional and sturdy enough for the laptop to hold any of its four modes (laptop, tablet, theater, and tent), I noticed a gentle knock had manifested in the hinge after a few days of use. You can feel the hinge “catch” slightly when first opening the laptop and transitioning it to tablet mode. It doesn’t affect useability at all, but it also wasn’t there when I first got the device, so I felt it was worth mentioning here.

The Yoga 7i 16 (Gen I reviewed comes equipped with a 16:10 FHD+ display, a 13th Gen Intel Core i7 processor (the more efficient U-series that focuses on battery life, not the P-series that focuses on performance), and a respectable amount of RAM and storage. While this laptop does support stylus input on its display, this unit does not come with a pen in the box. This configuration strikes a wonderful balance between specs, experience, and price.
However, a different configuration available from Lenovo may fix two of the issues I have with my configuration: a poor display and no stylus in the box. You trade the efficient i7 for a P-series i5 and gain a brighter and higher resolution display (although I can’t attest to its quality). You can find those configurations below.

so this is the front-facing camera on the Lenovo Yoga 7i two in one convertible here a 16 inch version of course and this has a 1080p camera it’s an IR camera that means you can log in with face recognition with Windows hello there’s also a fingerprint scanner located below the keyboard that worked well said it was easy and registered my finger each and every time I’ve used it it also has a physical shutter switch so if you want to turn off the camera for more security and privacy that is certainly an option you got to love that now what do you think about the video quality what do you think about the audio quality of the array mics let me know in the comments section below okay
Lenovo Yoga 7i display
The Yoga 7i’s 16-inch 1,920 x 1,200-pixel glossy IPS touch-display is dreadful, channeling a dim and lackluster image even for a 2-in-1 at its price. Lifting the Yoga 7i’s lid was an instantaneous disappointment, especially after having just reviewed the striking Acer Swift Go 14. Even while browsing the internet, it was as if a black and white filter was plastered over the screen at all times.

I watched the trailer for Meg 2: The Trench where a series of creatures devour each other sequentially along the food chain. These shots, meant to take place in daylight, appeared as if the sun was eclipsed. The laptop is also surprisingly dim, and I’d often check to see if I was truly at maximum brightness while testing it. The scene where the crew plunges into the depths of the ocean reveals that its color isn’t much better, as the combination of electrical glows against the submerged foliage all looked faded and artificial.
