Software and updates

Andy Boxall/Digital Trends

The OnePlus 10T runs on OxygenOS 12, which is OnePlus’s Android 12 skin. Likewise, the Nothing Phone 1 also runs on its own version of Android 12, Nothing OS. The latter is probably one of the best versions of Android available now, which is certainly good going for an entirely new system. It’s remarkably free from bloatware and unnecessary apps or features, something that frees it up to run smoothly.

This contrasts slightly with OxygenOS, which is still pretty snappy and reliable but also has a few teething problems. As our review of the OnePlus 10T found, these include a tendency to show old ahead of new notifications, an overzealousness for showing system notifications (which can overcrowd the notification shade), and also a few bugs that undermine its practicality (such as not showing an option to change the USB-C port from charge mode to transfer data mode).

All in all, OxygenOS certainly isn’t a bad operating system, but it doesn’t impress as much as Nothing OS. Both devices promise three core software updates, so given that Nothing OS is a slicker system overall, the Nothing Phone snatches the win here.

OnePlus 10T review: Battery and charging

Fuelling the OnePlus 10T is a 4,800 mAh battery, a touch smaller than the 5,000 mAh cell inside the OnePlus 10 Pro. On our custom battery life test, in which we have phones surf the web continuously over cellular until they run out of power, the 10T survived 10 hours and 59 minutes at its full 120Hz, and slightly longer at 11 hours 22 minutes when set to 60Hz.

The OnePlus 10T’s result beats the Galaxy S22 Ultra (10 hours 18 minutes at 60Hz) and Pixel 6 Pro (7 hours 55 minutes at 60Hz), but it’s still about an hour short of the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s impressive 12 hours 16 minutes result, which Apple’s phone achieved with its adaptive refresh rate active. Still, nearly 11 hours of battery life is nothing to sniff at.

To power that battery up, OnePlus offers an almighty 150W charging system, via the included 160W USB-C charging brick. That gets you to 84% charge in 15 minutes and 100% charge in just 20 minutes, making the OnePlus 10T one of the fastest charging phones we’ve ever tried — it’s the very fastest if you measure by total milliamp hours filled in the shortest time.

High wattages like this can speed up battery degradation, but OnePlus assures users that after 1,600 cycles — basically, charging your phone once a day for more than four years — the battery will lose less than 20% of its original capacity.

Unlike the OnePlus 10 Pro, there’s no wireless charging on the OnePlus 10T. It’s not a critical feature, but it’s something all the 10T’s rivals have, even if it’s only the basic 7.5W Qi standard. As a result, it feels like a big miss on the OnePlus 10T’s part, given its flagship status. But this was presumably another one of OnePlus’ sacrifices to the altar of power.

OnePlus 10T review: Verdict

The OnePlus 10T is possibly the least OnePlus-y phone the company’s ever produced. The revival of the flagship T-series brings with it both some market-leading features but at the expense of other elements falling below par, and some OnePlus signature abilities disappearing. The result is a strong and attractively priced phone, even if it’s an uneven one.

The 10T’s focus on performance means in a direct comparison of features, it doesn’t come off well. It’s missing wireless charging, a telephoto camera and a fully adaptive display refresh rate, which are all standards for most flagship phones. With a much cheaper start price though, there are still some people who may find the trade-off worthwhile.

The OnePlus 10T could make for an excellent gaming phone, except with the reassurance of well-designed software and no obnoxious design elements. Equally, it could be a great work companion, with the good battery life meaning you’re not likely to be left in the lurch with 0% juice, and the outstanding charging making sure if that does happen, you won’t be with an un-powered device for long. If any of those three missing parts we mentioned above are deal breakers, and you aren’t fussed by the OnePlus 10T’s blistering performance, you could always go for the OnePlus 10 Pro, which costs more but offers a much better-rounded experience.

Beyond OnePlus, the Pixel 6 Pro (or the upcoming Pixel 7 Pro when the Pixel 7 family launches in the fall) is probably the phone to go for since it provides the 10T’s missing features for a cheaper than average price, and offers particularly good photography to boot. The Galaxy S22 Ultra and iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max would make excellent choices too, but those might be just out of your price range, while the regular Galaxy S22 and iPhone 13 don’t match up for display size or charging speed.

Next: Here’s everything we know about the OnePlus 11 Pro that could launch in 2023.

Portrait mode

Have you ever wondered if the OnePlus 10T has an advantage over other smartphones regarding edge recognition in portrait mode? Even under challenging circumstances, both phones have good edge recognition, so it does, but not by much. When taking this picture of the automobile inside, I manually pressed the screen to focus on the steering wheel and let the phone do the rest.

Both perform admirably, first realizing that the peddles are not in the foreground and that the rim is. By default, the OnePlus 10T does have a stronger blurred image than the Nothing Phone 1. It outperforms it by realizing that the spaces between the wheel’s spokes should blur. With OnePlus, 10T is more accurate, but the Nothing Phone 1 comes close. Although it’s close, the OnePlus 10T will prevail in the 2x zoom category.

OnePlus 10T has the best portrait mode features.

Battery

In our testing, we found that both the OnePlus 10T with a 4800mAh battery) and the Nothing Phone (1) (with its 4500mAh battery) had enough power to see us through the day, and didn’t lose too much charge when watching videos or playing games (although Nothing’s device did lose a surprising amount of charge while just on standby).

Both phones support fast-charging, but there are levels to this game; the OnePlus 10T can fully charge up in less than twenty minutes thanks to its super 150W fast-charging, while the Nothing Phone (1) takes around an hour to go from 0-100% with its 33W fast charger. However, the Phone (1) does still boast wireless charging, a feature that’s lacking on the 10T.

OnePlus 10T: The price

And what could the price be? The OnePlus 10 Pro starts at $899, and we’d expect the OnePlus 10T to cost less. Earlier rumors claimed that the phone would cost between $470 and $600 in China, and while we should expect a 10 to 20% markup for the international pricing, the OnePlus 10T should still cost significantly less than the OnePlus 10 Pro.

So far, we’ve heard rumors about quite a lot of potential OnePlus phones, namely the OnePlus 10R, OnePlus 10 Ultra, and a regular OnePlus 10, but this here OnePlus 10T so far seems like the most likely device to get released later this year. No matter what OnePlus calls it, it could be a callback to OnePlus’ roots that could be well-received by the company’s large fanbase across the world.

Cameras

Rear cameras

As mentioned earlier, the rear cameras are made up of a 50MP f/1.8 Sony IMX766 primary camera, 8MP f/2.2 119-degree ultra-wide-angle camera, and 2MP 2-4cm macro camera with an LED flash.

The macro camera is nearly useless and we would have liked it better if OnePlus just used two cameras. They could have made the specs of its secondary ultra-wide camera better.

Anyway, the stock camera app has the following modes: Photo, Video, Pro, Portrait, Night, Pano, Macro, Movie, Slo-Mo, Time-Lapse, Long Exposure, Dual-View Video, and Tilt-Shift.

The PRO mode allows for controls of white balance, exposure compensation (+-2), ISO (100-6400), and shutter speed (32 seconds to 1/8000s).

Screen

The OnePlus 10T has a highly impressive Fluid AMOLED screen, which measures 6.7-inches and boasts a host of impressive features including an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate, a 1,000Hz touch response rate, HDR10+ support, and over 1 billion colours. We loved using this screen, which is ideal for gaming in particular due to its smoothness and responsiveness.

Nothing Phone (1)

We were also rather impressed by the screen on the Nothing Phone (1), which has certainly not been skimped on. Measuring 6.55-inches, this OLED also supports HDR10+ content and boasts a 120Hz refresh rate, whilst matching the same 1080p resolution of the OnePlus 10T. Considering the price of each of these handsets, both of the screens are very impressive and you’re unlikely to be disappointed.

2x zoom

Even though neither phone seems to have an optical zoom feature, both applications offer a shortcut to a 2x digital zoom mode, which tempts users to use it. Both have issues. Therefore, neither is good. Since it overexposes, the focus is better overall on the Nothing Phone 1 than the OnePlus 10T. That can sometimes expose a little more information. However, this also brings more excellent edge enhancement and noise, as seen in the OnePlus 10T photographs.

I’d advise not utilizing the feature at all. However, the Nothing Phone 1 wins because of its sharper focus and gentler color treatment, which make its shots appear more natural and unprocessed than those of the OnePlus 10T. But just barely.

]Nothing Phone 1 takes over in perspective of zoom.

Cameras

Andy Boxall/Digital Trends

The OnePlus 10T has a triple-lens rear camera setup, including a 50-megapixel main lens with an 8MP wide-angle lens and a 2MP macro camera. With the Nothing Phone 1, users get a dual-lens array, featuring a 50MP main lens and a 50MP ultrawide.

It’s always hard to directly compare specs and deduce which phone has a better camera. That said, experience shows that the Nothing Phone 1 edges the 10T overall. Its main lens captures some very well-balanced shots, featuring a vibrant yet natural color palette that doesn’t suffer from oversaturation. Likewise, the main lens of the OnePlus also takes mostly balanced photos, without being quite as vibrant as the Nothing Phone.

Where the phones drift apart is with their respective ultrawide lenses. If you were being harsh, you could argue that the 10T’s ultrawide camera is there simply as a selling point, given that it doesn’t capture much detail and results too often in slightly washed-out photos. With the Nothing Phone, the ultrawide lens can be used to snap very shareable pics, and even if it doesn’t quite equal its main lens, it can be used very well in the right hands.

Portrait selfie

These selfies are very different even though both have a 16MP front camera. While the result of the Nothing Phone 1’s skin-smoothing and skin-tone-washing isn’t terrible. The absence of detail is a much bigger issue. It’s a different picture from the one click with the OnePlus 10T, which has a lot more detail and doesn’t overexpose my skin.

The portrait appearance is quite comparable on both devices. However, the OnePlus 10T delivers fewer jagged edges around the side of my face and has better depth than the Nothing Phone 1. The same issues surfaced when we compared the selfie camera on the Nothing Phone 1 to the iPhone 11.

OnePlus 10T has more good portrait selfies.

Design, display, and durability

Andy Boxall/Digital Trends

While the OnePlus 10T looks more or less identical to the OnePlus 10 Pro, the Nothing Phone 1 is unlike any phone you’ve ever seen before. Sure, it has a punch-hole selfie lens in the top-left corner of its display, but it also happens to have a transparent glass rear. Not only does this mean you see its internal components, but you also have Nothing’s Glyph LED lights to entertain you, seeing as how they light up in various ways in response to calls and/or notifications. Yes, some people will find all of this a bit much, but at a time when most smartphones occupy almost the same design space, the Nothing Phone is a breath of fresh air.

In addition, the Nothing Phone also has a more premium feel than the OnePlus 10T. That’s because it benefits from an aluminum frame, while the 10T is housed in a plastic chassis (with a glass front and rear). The 10T’s use of plastic gives it a cheaper feel than the Nothing Phone, undercutting any sense that it’s a more expensive device.

On the other hand, the OnePlus 10T does provide a superior display. It carries a 6.7-inch Fluid AMOLED screen, with a resolution of 2412 x 1080 pixels. This is basically the resolution you get with the Nothing Phone, although its 6.55-inch display uses an OLED rather than an AMOLED panel. As a result, it doesn’t quite offer the rich colors and dynamic contrasts of the 10T, despite both devices also supporting a 120Hz refresh rate.

In terms of durability, each phone uses Gorilla Glass 5 on its fronts and rears. The Nothing Phone 1 is certified with an IP53 water-and-dust resistance rating, while the OnePlus 10T manages a slightly higher IP54 (indicating fractionally greater water resistance).

The photos

The images show how software tuning impacts the performance even though they click with the identical camera that was mounted on two different phones. The bar image demonstrates how each business has used the camera’s style. OnePlus has increased the brightness & saturation in favor of a more immediately shared appearance compared to the muted, realistic appearance of the Nothing Phone 1. When you zoom closer, the harsher OnePlus shot loses clarity in favor of more excellent contrast, and the chimneys and overhead wire both have edge enhancement.

Some of these motifs are continued in the image of the sunflowers, with the OnePlus image being brighter and more vivid. The shot on the Nothing Phone 1 is less colorful, and because of exposure, a few of the detail is obscured by shadows. The backdrop blur completely covers the sunflower’s petals, even worse. The OnePlus 10T took a better photo here than the Nothing Phone 1, which was the subject of the first image, and that is the one I want to show.

Image under the Blazing sun

Let’s examine a third image taken under the blazing sun. The OnePlus 10T’s image is more vivid and has more excellent contrast, but it also has a lens flare and a skewed focus that favors the backdrop and backgrounds over the letters. The photo on the Nothing Phone 1 is more warmly colored and realistically colored, and when you zoom in, the notes are more distinct and in focus. Although there is no lens flare, the background is blurrier than I would like.

It’s hard to pick a winner in this scenario. There is no clear advantage for one camera over the other. With more obvious digital upgrades, the OnePlus 10T fails on a technical level, but the Nothing Phone 1 isn’t flawless either. If I had to pick one, the OnePlus 10T would win out since the photos are more suited to sharing unaltered, even though the Nothing Phone 1’s gorgeous natural tones are far more alluring. Although it’s very almost a draw, the 10T finally prevails.

OnePlus 10T wins.

Verdict

First party cases

OnePlus 10T is one of the few phones that carry the new Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 for under PHP 37K. There are very few phones to pick from which makes this one of the best phones for people who want the best possible performance for a lot lower than most of its peers.

Its main concern is the polycarbonate frame between the glass and the back panel. The long-term durability of the phone may be a concern for some.

We love the 120Hz FHD+ AMOLED panel with Gorilla Glass Protection, the 150W fast charging, and the surprisingly efficient battery.

The rear cameras take great pictures with only the ultra-wide struggling in low light. Our last concern is that video stabilization could be improved.

Otherwise, we sincerely think that the OnePlus 10T should seriously be considered for people who want the best performance at a lower price.

The camera app lets the user shoot with the main camera and the ultra-wide. The 2x is a crop of the main camera.

The images produced are sharp and detailed enough. These images are not the best in class but it is better than the current image quality from the mid-range offerings.

Close-up

The same can be said for close-ups. It is worth noting that the depth of field is shallow even when close-up so getting most of the subject in focus is difficult. However, the transition between the in-focus and out of focus areas is smooth.

Rear portrait mode

The rear camera’s portrait mode is impressive. It managed to detect the statue’s edges and then separate it from the background. The faux bokeh is not the smoothest but it works.

OnePlus 10T review: Software

OnePlus ships the 10T with OxygenOS 12.1, with three years of full updates and four years of security updates promised. That’s still below the four years of full OS updates that Samsung offers, and the five years of updates you get with Google. If you want to get the most out of your phone for the longest time, the OnePlus 10T may not be the ideal device.

There aren’t any noteworthy new features this time around as OnePlus is focussing on its Android 13 skin for later this year, but OxygenOS remains enjoyable to use. Features like the Shelf, which allows access to certain widgets in any app (a la iOS’ Control Center), a three-level adjustable Dark Mode and the implementation of Android 12’s adaptive Material You color schemes all make it one of the nicest Android skins around.

OnePlus 10T review: Price and availability

OnePlus will be selling the OnePlus 10T from August 25 in the U.K. The U.S. is in for a slightly longer wait, with pre-orders opening on September 1, and general availability starting September 29.

Prices start at $649/£629 for 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, or $749/£729 for 16GB RAM and 256GB storage. The OnePlus 10 Pro costs $799 currently from OnePlus, or £799 in the U.K.

Looking at rival phones, the OnePlus 10T undercuts the Samsung Galaxy S22, iPhone 13 and Pixel 6 Pro by roughly a $150/£100 margin, and the equivalent-sized Galaxy S22 Ultra and iPhone 13 Pro Max by even more. However, if you want to get the most out of the phone’s performance with the 16GB RAM version, then the gap isn’t quite as wide.

Design

In design terms, these two both look strikingly different. The Nothing Phone (1) has a refreshingly original look on its rear panel, with a see-through effect that shows off some of the internal components being accompanied by an LED light system that can illuminate when notifications are received, or even to show the charging status.

Nothing Phone (1)

While the Nothing Phone (1)’s bold new look won’t be admired by everyone, we reckon it’s likely to be more of a hit than the OnePlus 10T. This phone’s appearance is heavily dominated by its large and unattractive rear camera module, though we did like the jade green colour option.

OnePlus 10T

Both of the devices have Gorilla Glass 5 panels on the front and back, which should help make them more resilient to knocks and scrapes. The Nothing Phone (1) has an IP53 rating whereas the OnePlus 10T has no such certification., so we’re not to know exactly how it may cope if exposed to dust or water.

OnePlus 10T review: Performance

OnePlus put its focus on computer power with the 10T, and so it’s turned to a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor — an upgrade over the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in the OnePlus 10 Pro — and a maximum of 16GB RAM instead of 12GB.

Weirdly, the results are a mixed bag. The Geekbench result for the OnePlus 10T  is a bit low, although the Wild Life and Wild Life Extreme tests beat both the Pixel 6 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra. Yet, the iPhone 13 Pro Max still conquers all with its A15 Bionic chip. Also, the OnePlus 10T comes in dead last in the Adobe Premiere Rush video encoding test, despite its top-notch components.

Even if the benchmark results for the OnePlus 10T are a bit inconsistent, I still had a fun time playing games like Grid: Autosport (at max graphics) and Apex Legends Mobile on the phone. In the latter, I was able to crank the game up to ExtremeHD graphics and Ultra frame rate without seeing any stuttering or the phone getting uncomfortably hot.

Performance

The OnePlus 10T has the very latest Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 mobile chipset on board, and we were seriously impressed with how it acquitted itself. Demanding games ran very smoothly, and day-to-day tasks were accomplished very easily without any lag or glitching in our experience.

Meanwhile, the Snapdragon 778G+ chip on the Nothing Phone (1) was also found to have more than enough power for most users, however there were a couple of hitches in the user interface such as stuttering, and some serious slowdown when using the camera app.

As you can see in the above table, the OnePlus 10T does comfortable outperform the Phone (1) in CPU benchmarking scores, so if power is what you’re looking for then it will be your best bet.

Price

The OnePlus 10T costs $699/£629/€699, which places it squarely in the mid-range of the smartphone market. It’s not cheap, but it does offer some flagship-level specifications, as you’ve seen from this comparison, including the screen and fast-charging capability.

The Nothing Phone (1) is at a significantly lower starting price than this, costing £399/€469. This places it on the cusp of being a budget phone rather than a full-blown mid-ranger, but this makes it a good deal more affordable to a wider range of customers.

Verdict

Both of these devices offer good value for money in the mid-range segment, so it can be hard to choose between the two.

In our experience, we preferred the eye-catching design of the Nothing Phone (1), which also has an IP rating, and it is more affordable too; however, the OnePlus 10T offers better performance and a better screen too, while its fast-charging ability is one of the very best we’ve ever come across.
