The comparison is based on multiple factors including design, features, sound, mics, battery, and of course, price. Without further ado, let’s get started.
Design and Ergonomics
AirPods 2nd generation carried the same design as the original AirPods. Meaning, you are getting the same long stem that sticks outside the ears. It looked fine when it was launched but now with other rivals, the design looks a bit outdated.
With AirPods 3 and AirPods Pro, Apple has tweaked the design and shortened the steam. They look better when tucked in ears. The only difference between the two is that AirPods Pro comes with silicon ear tips that offer better grip and fit in-ears.
Based on Apple’s track record, you won’t have a hard time keeping AirPods 3 stuck in your ears. They should fit better in-ears but the lack of silicon tips might push some buyers to the Pro.

Let’s talk about the most important aspect of TWS ⏤ sound quality. After all, what’s the point of having dozens of features when sound quality isn’t up to the mark? Let’s start with AirPods 2.
The original Apple AirPods and AirPods 2 were never known for their sound quality. The ease-of-use, fast pairing, iOS integration, and the FOMO (fear of missing out) made them popular among the audience. It offers standard audio that’s good enough for an average consumer out there.
With AirPods 3, Apple is bringing features from AirPods Pro. You get the same Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking that Apple first introduced with AirPods Pro. AirPods 3 also features a custom high-excursion Apple driver and a high dynamic range amplifier for clear and immersive sound quality.
In terms of the sound department, AirPods 3 is more in line with AirPods Pro than AirPods 2. As for AirPods Pro, you must have guessed more features with the Pro branding. Apart from the Apple driver and amplifier, the AirPods Pro also features Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) with transparency mode.
If you are living in a loud or crowded environment, AirPods Pro should be on your priority list.
Microphone and Sensors
If there is one thing that Apple absolutely gets right with AirPods is mic quality. AirPods 2 features dual beam-forming microphones for clear calls.
As for AirPods 3 and AirPods Pro, they both have dual beam-forming as well as inward-facing microphones for crisp calls. They also come with Skin-detect and Force sensors that help AirPods differentiate between your ear and other skin. That way, AirPods can automatically pause music when you aren’t wearing them.
The addition of a Force sensor offers a notch-above experience to control music compared to inconvenient double-tap gestures on AirPods 2.
In shorts, AirPods 3 and AirPods Pro are neck-to-neck when it comes to microphones and sensors.
IP Rating
We will keep this one short. AirPods 2 doesn’t come with any kind of protection against water, sweat, or dust. With AirPod 3 and AirPods Pro, Apple has added an IPX4 rating for sweat and water resistance.
Battery Life and Charging
Here is where it gets interesting. AirPods 2 offers 5 hours of listening time and up to 3 hours of talk time with a single charge. With the charging case, you can expect up to 24 hours of listening time and 18 hours of talk time.
AirPods with ANC mode on offers 4.5 hours of listening time with a single charge and 5 hours with ANC mode off. The talk time is rated at 3.5 hours. The included case is good enough for up to 24 hours of listening time and 18 hours of talk time.
AirPods 3 offers the best battery life of the bunch. Apple claims up to 6 hours of listening time and up to 4 hours of talk time on a single charge. The included case takes the number to 30 hours of listening time and up to 20 hours of talk time.
AirPods also come with fast charging. For AirPods 2 is good to go with 3 hours of listening time with 15 minutes of charge in the case.
AirPods 3 and AirPods Pro offer 1 hour of listening or talk time with 5 minutes of charge. Both the high-end AirPods also come with a MagSafe charging case.
Connectivity
All three AirPods come with an H1 chip for fast pairing and Bluetooth 5.0. AirPods Pro leg up the cheaper AirPods with Find My support. If you accidentally misplace AirPods Pro, you can easily find them using Apple’s Find My app.

AirPods 3rd Gen vs AirPods 2nd Gen: Design and battery life
The AirPods 3rd Gen have had a serious overhaul in the design department. The long stems of the 2nd generation are gone, leaving much shorter sticks that feel great to squeeze for control but don’t get in the way nearly as much when you are taking on or off a facemask. The bud itself is slightly bigger but there’s no difference in fit between the AirPods 3rd Gen and 2nd.
Yes, for better or worse, if you don’t like the smooth plastic fit of one, you also won’t like the other – or you will like it, of course. Silicone ear tips are only available for the Apple AirPods Pro so if your ears don’t like the fit of these, you’ll want to upgrade anyway.
For those who do enjoy the fit though, once you’ve got them snug, both sets of AirPods will happily stay for light running and at the gym. Only the 3rd Gen models are sweat and water resistant though, so if you’re a regular gym rat, you will want the upgraded versions. Design wise, as we said in our Apple AirPods 3rd Gen review, “the design is as premium as you’d expect to get from Apple. The buds have a pristine, almost seamless finish. The case does too, and Apple has the best balance of hinge quality and magnet strength on the lid out of everyone – it’s so satisfying to flick open and closed if you like to fidget.”
Apple understands that battery life is one of the biggest considerations when we’re investing in true wireless buds and has bumped up the hours of charge significantly between the generations.
There’s only one more hour of charge in each bud – the 2nd Gen holds 5 hours and the 3rd holds six – but the extra juice available in the 3rd Gen’s case equals 30 hours of play, while the 2nd only provides 24 hours. Depending on your commute, this might be a few extra train journeys per charge which is always helpful. The AirPods 3rd Gen also come with a MagSafe- and Qi wireless charging-compatible case while the 2nd can only be charged via Lightning.

AirPods 3 vs. AirPods 2: Which should you buy?
There’s no doubt that the AirPods 3 are better than the AirPods 2. They should sound better, have more features, and have an official IPX4 rating, so you don’t have to worry about taking them on a run. Top that all off with a design that should help the earbuds stay in your ears — although your mileage may vary based on your ear shape — and the extra battery life, the AirPods 3 are very compelling at $179.
Speaking of price, the AirPods 2 have now dropped down to $129, which is a great price for a set of Bluetooth earbuds that offer decent sound quality, a nice pair of microphones, and seamless switching between all your Apple devices. If you’re on a tighter budget or have a much older device that the AirPods 3 doesn’t support, the AirPods 2 are still a good pair of earbuds.

The AirPods 3 have better battery life, better features, and likely sound better than their predecessor. They don’t feature ANC, but the improved design that emulates the AirPods Pro look is a welcome refresh to the AirPods.

Of course, there’s a lot more to AirPods than a nice design and an Apple badge. The reason they have become the earbuds of choice for many the world over is because of their effortless usability. The connection with Apple devices is seamless, with «Hey Siri» voice commands letting you control hands-free.
The AirPods connect instantly to your last audio device and the bud-to-bud connection is exceptionally strong. They also support Apple’s Audio Sharing feature, which lets you and another AirPods-owning pal listen to the same audio from one iPhone, iPad or Apple TV.
The AirPods 3 do all this and more, with the big news being that they join the AirPods Max and AirPods Pro 2 in supporting full spatial audio with dynamic head-tracking. That means users can take advantage of Atmos-powered spatial audio tracks from the Apple Music catalogue, but also, more uniquely, get a theatre-like experience with movies and TV shows from, say, Apple TV+ and Netflix. The idea is that the sound always stays relative to the screen, so if you move your head, the audio will adjust accordingly for a more realistic experience – turn your back on the screen, and it’ll sound like it’s coming from behind you, for example. It works, too – and most impressively with movies. As we noted in our AirPods 3 review, the technology is true to its word, keeping voices and action tied to the screen regardless of movement. The ambush scene in the first episode of Apple TV+’s See is much more involving when the sound is ‘spatialised’ – the soundstage opens up so that falling boulders sound more dramatic, and even the extra envelopment of heavy rainfall makes for a more compelling audiovisual experience.
The AirPods 3 also get Adaptive EQ, which was introduced with the Pro and means the earbuds will tune the sound they produce in real-time according to how they fit in the ear. And since the AirPods 2, Apple has also worked to improve voice call quality, firstly by bringing in support for a codec called AAC-ELD, specifically designed to enhance speech, and secondly by covering the beamforming microphones on the earbuds with an acoustic mesh in an effort to reduce wind noise.
Both the AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 use the same H1 chip – there’s been no evolution there, it’s present across the AirPods line-up – but you should know that the new AirPods do require Apple devices running the now available iOS 15.1, iPadOS 15.1, watchOS 8.1, tvOS 15.1, or macOS Monterey.

The Apple AirPods 2 were a marked improvement over the first-generation model, capable of going louder and sounding more composed. They’re pleasingly tonally neutral and low-level dynamic shifts are handled admirably, even if we prefer a number of AirPods alternatives for their better performance.
Apple hasn’t stood still in the sound department: the AirPods 3 deliver a sonic step up from the AirPods 2. A brand-new «low distortion» driver has been tuned similarly to recreate that familiar easygoing, natural balance, but the generational leap is defined by added fullness, more defined bass and extra clarity and cleanliness. Everything’s just that bit more precise and organised.
To quote our AirPods 3 review, «it’s evolution over revolution, but that is OK. We’re fans of their neutrality and clarity, and the AirPods sound better than the cheaper crop of ANC-less competition».

Final Thoughts
Providing you can afford the extra $50, it will be worthwhile getting the third-generation AirPods over the second-generation model. The third-generation AirPods add a raft of meaningful features and improvements over its predecessor, including improved design and sound quality, spatial audio, Adaptive EQ, sweat and water resistance, and MagSafe charging. The second-generation model is also now fairly old.
The second-generation AirPods are still a good introduction to the AirPods experience with seamless pairing, automatic device switching, and Hey Siri functionality, but if possible you should get the third-generation model due to its large number of improvements. AirPods frequently see through Amazon and other third-party retailers, so stepping up to the third-generation version may be more worth it if you can take advantage of one of those deals.

Apple says “a new driver and improved acoustic algorithms help Active Noise Cancellation reduce more unwanted noise, so nothing interrupts listening during your commute and when you need to focus.”

AirPods 3 vs AirPods 2: Battery life

Wireless earbuds have always been slightly hampered by short battery life because it’s hard to fit big batteries in a device that’s so small, but Apple did manage to increase battery performance here. The AirPods 3 will now get six hours of playback time on a single charge, as opposed to the five hours that the AirPods 2 got. Plus, it can also give you about 30 hours of battery life when you consider the charging case. The AirPods 2 only had a max of about 24 hours, with the case factored into the equation.
The AirPods 3 are also MagSafe compatible and can fast charge for an hour of playback time in about five minutes. The AirPods 2 did have a wireless charging case option, but it appears that with the launch of the AirPods 3, the only model Apple is currently selling is with the wired sharing case. However, the AirPods 2 can still charge for about three hours of playback in about 15 minutes.

Странно в этой компании выглядит старая гарнитура AirPods 2, которая до сих пор продается официально. Цена устройства ниже на 2000 рублей, но набор возможностей гораздо хуже.

What’s the difference in the feature set?
Both have the H1 chip but neither model features noise cancellation, though the affordable Beats Studio Buds do, with Apple seemingly focused on ensuring the AirPods Pro take pride of place in terms of features.
Battery life for the new AirPods is improved, with six hours from each charger and 30 hours in total, beating the AirPods 2’s five and 24 hours.
The entry-level AirPods doesn’t support wireless charging but the new model does alongside MagSafe functionality. Fast-charging is supported across all models.
Another advantage the new AirPods have over the older model is Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, to listen to immersive audio via Apple Music. Auto-pause and Auto-sharing are also on the table for the 3rd gen AirPods, which matches the 2019 model.
The upgrades here are enough to give the new AirPods the win here. The increased battery is a nice boost, and for those who prefer the convenience of wireless charging then that’s on the table as well, along with Spatial Audio for Apple Music subscribers.
