What You Should Know About PS5 SSDs

The Sony PlayStation 5 is a seriously advanced bit of kit with a lot of technology built in, including a fast Solid State Drive (SSD). This built-in SSD uses memory chips rather than the spinning glass disc that hard drives use and can hold up to 825 Gigabytes (GB) of data, which includes the software that the PS5 runs to create the user interface and access the Internet. After that, you usually have about 650GB of space left for games.

While designing the PS5, Sony realized that games would get bigger and bigger, so they included a way to add more storage, a Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) M.2 port. That is the same port used to add SSDs to laptops and desktop computers. This port was not initially available to users, but an update in April 2021 offered the ability to install an SSD that can be used to store game content. This supports drives up to 4 Terabytes (TB) in size, more than four times larger than the built-in SSD.

It is a good job that they did because modern PS5 games are monsters; Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War takes up about 325GB of space or about half of the built-in drive. That doesn’t include the game’s various seasons of downloadable content (DLC).

Another recent update to the PS5 software added the ability to play games directly from the add-in SSD, so you can install games straight to this larger space and play them from there. One thing to note about these SSDs is that they are much slower at writing data than reading it. Copying a game to the add-in SSD typically took about six minutes while copying from the add-in SSD took about two.

That’s because all of these SSDs use Multi-Level Cells (MLC), where each cell (the part that stores the data) holds multiple bits of data by using multiple charge levels to indicate the different combinations of data. So, when you write a bit of data to the drive, the drive has to read the cell charge level, recalculate the cell’s charge level with the new data, then write the new charge. To read data, the drive only has to read the cell charge. Before buying any new drive, make sure you double check the listed sequential read speed, as this is how fast the PS5 will read data from the SSD.

A drive’s endurance gives a reasonable indication of how long you can use it before reaching the end of its lifespan. Even a drive with an endurance of 300TBW can write 150GB+ of data every single day for five years before it nears the end of its lifespan. That’s the equivalent of installing Cyberpunk 2077 twice a day, for 1,826 days. It’s safe to say that most PS5s won’t get that type of intensive use, so don’t feel you have to pay through the nose for the highest TBW count possible.

To be considered compatible, SSDs must be fitted with some sort of heat-dissipation mechanism — like a heatsink. If you choose an SSD with a heatsink then in order to fit the expansion slot, it cannot exceed a height of 2.25 millimeters beneath the M.2 SSD, and 8 millimeters above the SSD. There are several SSDs available that use a heatsink that are too tall to fit within Sony’s recommended specs, but nothing is stopping you from removing that heatsink and replacing it with a smaller one (if the model of SSD allows for it).

The Crucial P5 Plus is a good choice for your PS5 SSD upgrade, coming from a reliable brand that is well-known for its storage & RAM products. We’ve highlighted a few Gen 4×4 M.2 storage options that require some adjustments from stock to be PS5 ready, which may mean adding a heatsink of choice or replacing one to ensure it meets Sony’s SSD height limits.

The size of your external drive directly depends on your requirements. No matter what type you choose ‒ SSD or HDD, you should carefully think of your particular needs. For instance, most external drives provide at least 128GB of storage, which is enough to keep thousands of CDs in FLAC audio format.

However, 128 GB won’t do if you plan to back up your entire PC. In this case, you need more space and it’s better to lash out on an SSD. Of course, there is a huge difference between saving your audio tracks and saving the entire computer. For instance, you can back up only the most important files, like documents, photos, etc.

Don’t discard slower HDDs. It’s all about balancing capacity and performance. Of course, if you have an HDD, you wait longer when transferring games and during loading. However, the difference is not that serious.

We tried several HDDs and SSDs with a PS5 to understand what disk storage is better. The list of tested models includes an external HDD, a basic SSD using the old SATA-6 interface, a high-performance 2000MB/sec NVMe SSD and three 1050MB/sec NVMe SSDs. We defined times for one of these drives as the performance had been almost the same.

The testing procedure looked like this. We analyzed the process of copying God of War from the PS5’s internal storage to each drive. We timed how long the game was launching and how long it was loading from the main menu. Plus, we conducted some tests with Horizon: Zero Dawn. We also noted how much time it took to copy God of War back from the external storage device to the internal SSD.
