Mission X Design

For this concept study, Porsche developed a new shade of paint called Rocket Metallic. It goes well with the satin-finished carbon fibre elements on the lower half of the body. The aim of the car’s design was to demonstrate that hypercars do not to look hyper-aggressive.

The concept study’s wheels showcase intricate details. The rear axle is equipped with nearly transparent aero blades, resembling turbines that enhance brake cooling.

Spanning over both occupants, a lightweight glass dome with a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) exoskeleton provides an impressive enclosure. Le Mans-style doors are affixed to the A-pillar and roof, opening forwards and upwards—a design reminiscent of the renowned Porsche 917 racing car. The light signature of the Mission X catches the eye, as designers have reimagined the distinct Porsche four-point graphic.

Drawing inspiration from historic racing cars like the Porsche 906 and 908, the headlights adopt a vertical base form that elegantly descends towards the road. A high-tech support structure frames the LED light modules, accentuating the slender elements of the daytime running lights and indicators. When activated, the lights unfold like an opening eye, emitting a confident glow when fully illuminated.

The rear of the Mission X boasts a full-length light unit that creates a floating effect. Notably, transparent and illuminated Porsche lettering adds to its allure. The sculptural rear light appears suspended in the air, supported by a structure that spans the entire width of the vehicle in four segments. During charging, the “E” of the Porsche lettering pulsates, adding a distinctive touch.

An intriguing detail is the debut of the modernized Porsche crest on the Mission X. Distinguished by brushed precious metal, a three-dimensional honeycomb structure, a refreshed heraldic beast, and subtle gold accents, the refined crest conveys the essence of Porsche. It can be found on the hood, steering wheel, and in monochrome form on the wheel centers.

The interior’s asymmetry and color concept emphasize driver focus. The two seats differ in color—Andalusia Brown leather pads adorn the driver’s seat, harmonizing with the Kalahari Grey center console and dashboard. In contrast, the passenger seat features the distinctive Andalusia Brown shade.

Sporting CFRP seat shells and integrated six-point seatbelts in the monocoque, the interior draws further inspiration from motorsport. The open-top steering wheel incorporates mode switches and shift paddles, while multiple cameras are present for recording, initiated by the driver pressing the Record button (REC) on the multi-purpose controller.

A noteworthy feature on the passenger side is the bayonet system embedded in the instrument panel, accommodating a stopwatch module. Porsche Design has developed a special stopwatch module for the Mission X, featuring both analogue and digital displays. These timepieces cater to racetrack and rally use, presenting lap times and vital driver information, among other data.

Салон Porsche Mission X

Porsche Mission X

Performance Technology

Porsche have set out some performance goals for the Mission X Concept should it go into production. The primary goal is that it should be the fastest road-approved vehicle on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. It should also have a power-to-weight ratio of one PS per kilogram and match the 911 GT3 RS in terms of downforce. Porsche also wants to give the Mission X double the charging speed of the Taycan Turbo S with a new 900 volt system architecture.

Porsche will use next gen permanently excited synchronous motors, direct cooling of the stator, a compact, lightweight single-speed transmission, and a directly oil-cooled battery positioned behind the seats. The Porsche Mission X design study uses a carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) exoskeleton to reduce weight and Porsche Active Aerodynamics to improve airflow and downforce. Aerodynamics are also supported by a staggered set of wheels, 20″ in the front and 21″ at the rear.

Suspension and damper technology from from the world of motorsports with quick access through individual mode switches on the steering wheel. Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus enables precise steering behaviour during dynamic drives.

MISSIONS ACCOMPLISHED

A decade after the 918 Spyder captured the production car record at the epic, 13-mile-long Nurburgring Nordschleife, and on the eve of its 75th Anniversary, Porsche unveiled the Mission X as a vision of its next hypercar, a car designed to absolutely smash that original record and destroy every other car that has bested it since.

Visually, the Mission X is a mashup and throwback to Porsche’s classic endurance racers. But, from a technology standpoint, this all-electric machine is a clear nod to the future.

Let’s start with the name. Porsche first rolled out the Mission nomenclature for 2015’s Mission E, unveiled at that year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. The Mission E was a long, low, lovely electric concept that charmed the masses with the delights of a future of electric performance cars. Mission E would find its way to production four years later as the Porsche Taycan, still one of the world’s fairest EVs in the land.

The Mission X has record-breaking in its sights.

Porsche

Porsche’s next Mission was 2021’s Mission R, this time a vision for a future of all-electric racing. Porsche’s customer racing programs are legendary. If you turn up to the track to watch virtually any form of endurance racing anywhere in the world you’ll probably see a 911 being hustled around by someone. At some point, even days like these will go electric, and the Mission R was designed to show what an all-electric car designed for just that purpose might look like.

That brings us to Porsche’s third Mission. Mission X’s reason for living is clear: bring the Nurburgring Nordschleife production lap record back to Porsche and do it with style — plus a little luxury, too.

TWICE THE POWER?

When it comes to technology to actually allow that kind of driving, that’s where Porsche is being a little less transparent. That the Mission X will be fully electric is for sure, and all-wheel-drive seems like a given, but whether that will come from two motors, front and rear, or four motors, one per corner, remains to be seen.

We also don’t know how much power those motors will deliver, except that Porsche has promised a power-to-weight ratio of one horsepower per 2.2 pounds. Without knowing the weight that makes this impossible to calculate, but if we assume a similar mass to Porsche’s last hypercar, the 918 Spyder, we could be looking at as much as 1,600 horsepower. That’s about twice what the 918 offered.

PREVNEXT

That’s likely optimistic, though. With a presumably sizable battery pack, there’s a good chance the Mission X will weigh considerably more. But then again, it does have a full carbon fiber body to keep weight down.

Porsche hasn’t said how many kilowatt-hours of electricity that battery pack will hold, though most modern EVs have somewhere between 75 and 100 kilowatt-hours. Porsche did say, however, that this pack will use a new, 900-volt architecture, meaning it can charge faster even than the Taycan Turbo S, which can juice its 93.4 kWh battery pack from 10 to 80 percent in 20 minutes.

A fast-charging pack on a car like this is important, as a significant part of its design is readiness for action on the race track. Traditional hypercars can pull into the pits between sessions and fill up the gas tank. An ideal electric hypercar will be able to do the same.

That battery pack will be positioned in what Porsche calls an «e-core layout,» eschewing the current trend of spreading an EV’s batteries across the floor of the car and instead packaging it all in an upright module behind the seats, not unlike the original Tesla Roadster. This not only concentrates the weight of the batteries and passengers into the center of the car, but allows the whole thing to sink closer to the ground, creating that lusciously low profile that everyone loves to see in a hypercar.

Porsche

How low? That we don’t know, but Porsche did say it’s approximately 177 inches long, or five inches shorter than the 918 Spyder. That makes for relatively svelte dimensions, but despite that Porsche is promising more downforce than its new 911 GT3 RS, which is covered in aggressive aerodynamic bits and pieces. The lack of massive aerodynamic appendages on the Mission X make that promise seem unlikely, but the giant diffuser sticking out from under the rear bumper is there for a reason. That’ll be paired with active aerodynamics of the sort usually only seen on Formula One cars.

Inspired by racing

The Mission X appears rather compact, measuring 4.5 meters in length and 2 meters in width. Its wheelbase of 2.73 meters is identical to that of the Carrera GT and the 918 Spyder. Its overall shape and low height (1.2m) are reminiscent of the racing cars competing in the World Endurance Championship, and the door mechanism is clearly inspired by them as well.

At the front, the vertical double lights resemble the lighting signature of the 906 and 908, while the rear light strip is a nod to both the 959 and the current 963 models competing in the WEC. The Mission X also introduces a new, more streamlined version of the traditional Porsche emblem on its hood and steering wheel, as well as a monochrome version on the wheel hub caps.

A glass bubble with a carbon fibre-reinforced composite exoskeleton surrounds the cockpit. On board, everything is organized around the driver, as evidenced by the asymmetry of the passenger compartment in the choice of colours. The seat shells are integrated into the monocoque chassis.

Porsche Mission X is a dream come true

Porsche has introduced the Mission X concept car study to its fans, the car manufacturer’s fastest road-legal vehicle yet – at least on the Nürburgring Nordschleife (racetrack) – equipped with Le-Mans style doors that swing upwards and a high-performance electric powertrain. The unveiling of Mission X took place on the eve of the ‘75 Years of Porsche Sports Cars’ exhibition opening on June 8th, 2023 at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart Zuffenhausen. From its sculpted form and muscular lines down to its long-slung bodywork and Rocket Metallic color, Porsche’s dream of realizing its hypercar design that blazes through streets and roads is hoped to come to finesse fruition.

Porsche Mission X, a high-performance luxury concept car with a sleek and stylish design, is imagined to have a low and sculpted body with smooth lines instead of an aggressive look. Certain parts of the body have a carbon-weave finish, and the wheels have aero blades for better brake cooling. A lightweight glass dome covers both the driver and passenger, made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, and the doors open forwards and upwards, similar to those used on the famous Porsche 917 racing car. The headlights have a unique design inspired by historic racing cars, and the rear of the car features a full-length light unit with transparent Porsche lettering that illuminates.

Le Mans Inspired

Porsche unveiled the Mission X concept on the 75th anniversary of the company, and on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. There’s a natural link here, with the Mission X’s design said to be Le Mans-inspired as well, with doors that open upwards and forward, ala the classic 917. That’s just one highlight of some radical styling, which includes a glass bubble covering the passenger compartment that’s protected by a carbon fiber exoskeleton. The resulting shape is something reminiscent of Le Mans prototypes of yore but executed with a modern flourish.

Inside that dome is pretty remarkable, too, with contrasting-color seats for driver and passenger plus six-point harnesses for both. As a weird, semi-retro throwback to the 959, the passenger dash features a slot for either analog or digital stopwatches.

Despite what will presumably be an outrageous amount of power, the Mission X is relatively compact. It’s 177 inches long in total and 78.7 inches wide, an impressive 6 inches shorter than the 918 Spyder and more than 2 inches wider. Despite that, its wheelbase is the same.

Though electric-powered like the Taycan, Porsche has set the battery pack behind the seats, a so-called «e-core» layout meant to create the same sort of handling dynamics as a mid-engined car.

fastest road-legal vehicle on Nürburgring Nordschleife

For tech buffs, Porsche Mission X measures approximately 4.5 meters long and two meters wide, making the hypercar concept study a relatively compact hypercar. Its wheelbase is expected to be 2.73 meters, similar to the dimensions of the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder, and its battery is installed behind the vehicle’s seats. For aerodynamic purposes, the concept car has mixed-size tires with 20-inch wheels at the front and 21-inch wheels at the rear.

Porsche states that if the Mission X goes into series production, it should, at least, be the fastest road-legal vehicle around the Nürburgring Nordschleife (circuit track); have a power-to-weight ratio of roughly one PS per kilogram; achieve downforce values that are well in excess of those delivered by the current 911 GT3 RS; and offer significantly improved charging performance with its 900-volt system architecture and charge roughly twice as quickly as Porsche’s current frontrunner, the Taycan Turbo S.

‘The Porsche Mission X is a technology beacon for the sports car of the future. It picks up the torch of iconic sports cars of decades past: like the 959, the Carrera GT, and the 918 Spyder before it, the Mission X provides a critical impetus for the evolutionary development of future vehicle concepts,’ says Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. ‘Daring to dream and dream cars are two sides of the same coin for us: Porsche has only remained Porsche by constantly changing.’

RETROFUTURISM

Visually, the Mission X has very little in common with any road-going Porsche that the company has ever produced. Odd? A little, but that’s actually kind of the point: This is a car that references racecars, not road cars.

Take the doors, for example. They open upwards and out, just like those on the iconic 917, which earned Porsche its first Le Mans victory in 1970. The low hood and headlight orientation is a clear nod to the earlier 906 endurance racer, while the so-called «exoskeleton» roof actually references the Mission R concept mentioned above.

On the luxury side, appointments are admittedly few, but the attention to detail is obvious. The individual pads that make up driver and passenger seats are customizable to a degree we’ve never seen before, precision crafted in 3D to perfectly match the shapes of the privileged bodies that occupy them.

And then there’s the so-called «timer unit,» a module that clips onto the passenger dashboard providing an old-school analog chronometer for lap timing of the vintage sort. Rich folks love themselves a luxury watch, and that’s basically what Porsche is putting front and center in front of the passenger.

Finally, Porsche does include some practical perks in the Mission X, like a storage compartment between the seats with slots for wireless smartphone charging. If nothing else, the latch on that compartment will keep those phones from flying around the cabin during more aggressive driving.

The Mission X

Or it will be, at least, if Porsche decides to build it. This is the Mission X, just a concept for now, but a strong indicator of what Porsche’s next moon-shot could look like.

How big of a shot? Porsche says this thing will offer a remarkable power-to-weight ratio of at least one horsepower per 2.2 pounds of weight from a new, all-electric, 900-volt architecture. If we use Porsche’s last hypercar as a benchmark, 2015’s 918 Spyder and its 3,700-pound curb weight, that would mean somewhere in the area of 1,700 horsepower. That’s nearly twice what the Spyder was putting down when it became the first production car to do a lap of the Nurburgring in under seven minutes.

Again, that’s just a guess as we don’t yet know the weight, but that kind of power level would make this easily the most powerful road-going Porsche ever, with considerably more power even than the track-only 919 Hybrid Evo made when Porsche uncorked the thing and took it on a world tour of obliterating lap records.

F1 PERFORMANCE AND PRICES

It will take performance like a Formula One car for Porsche to take back the production car record. That record currently stands at 6:35, held by the Mercedes-AMG One, a car that takes more than a little inspiration from the Formula One World Championship-winning car driven by Lewis Hamilton. In fact, the AMG One basically takes that car’s entire engine, not to mention lots of other goodies, creating an outrageously fast and suitably exotic hypercar.

An outrageously valuable one, too. The Mercedes-AMG One carried a price tag of $2.7 million to start, and all 275 of them are long-since sold. How much will Porsche’s Mission X cost? The 918 Spyder cost $845,000 new. Just adjusting for inflation, that car today would cost over $1 million. In reality, they’re worth about twice that at auction. With the significant tech and performance advances here, it’s safe to assume the Mission X would carry an even loftier premium.

That is, if Porsche actually decides to build it. Remember, Mission X is a designation for a concept car. When I asked Porsche CEO Oliver Blume about whether Porsche will put it into production, he told me: «During the next month, we will consider to build it. It isn’t decided yet.»

So, the good news is that Blume’s decision will come soon. The bad news is that, even if Mission X gets a thumbs up, it could be years before it hits the streets. It was four years between the Mission E concept and the Taycan production car, after all.

Mission X in 2027? Wake me up when it’s my turn to drive.

open-top steering wheel with mode switches and shift paddles

The Porsche crest on Mission X has been modernized with a brushed precious metal finish and other tweaks such as a three-dimensional honeycomb structure, a refreshed heraldic beast, and a more subtle gold color. Inside the car, the two seats have different colors, with the driver’s seat in Kalahari Grey and the passenger seat in Andalusia Brown. The interior oozes a sporty feel with features like an open-top steering wheel whose design resembles the wheels found in arcade games and is equipped with mode switches and shift paddles. There are also multiple cameras in the car that can record when the driver presses the record button.

An interesting feature Porsche Mission X brings in is a bayonet system on the passenger side where a stopwatch module can be attached. Porsche Design has created a special stopwatch module with analog and digital displays for the Mission X which is typically designed for use on racetracks and rallies and can show lap times and other important information for the driver. In its luxurious, road-legal way, Porsche Mission X makes the driver feel as if they were competing in a circuit racetrack like a true racecar driver.

the unveiling of Mission X took place on the eve of the ‘75 Years of Porsche Sports Cars’ exhibition

Cutting-edge in every way

Porsche’s vision for the Mission X is clear and straightforward: pushing electric propulsion to the max, the Mission X, if produced as a series, should be the fastest road-legal model on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, boasting a power-to-weight ratio of approximately 1 kg/HP, exhibiting significantly higher downforce than the current 911 GT3 RS, and offering greatly improved charging performance with its 900V system design, charging twice as fast as the Taycan Turbo S, currently Porsche’s most powerful model in terms of charging speed.

The Mission X thus has a battery housed in the centre, behind the seats. This configuration, referred to as an “E-Core”, allows for a balanced mass distribution at the centre of the vehicle, similar to a traditional mid-engine model where this arrangement forms the basis for excellent agility.

While Porsche has not revealed detailed performance figures, the targeted power-to-weight ratio of 1 kg/HP sets the tone: it surpasses that of the Rimac Nevera, Bugatti Chiron, and other vehicles like the Lotus Evija. Only the AC Cobra Weineck 780 Cui, Koenigsegg Jesko, SSC Tuatara and Hennessey Venom F5, all of which are vehicles with internal combustion engines, manage to achieve a power-to-weight ratio lower than 1. While no official confirmation of production has been made, it seems highly unlikely that Porsche would limit the Mission X to just a “simple” design study.
