Vesemir: when do we see him next?
A far older Vesemir (Nightmare of the Wolf is set decades before even the earliest events of The Witcher live-action series) is set to appear in The Witcher season 2, played by Kim Bodnia.
«I am so thrilled to welcome Kim Bodnia to the cast of The Witcher,» showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said after the casting announcement. «I have admired his unique talents in shows like Killing Eve and The Bridge, and cannot wait for him to bring strength, tenacity, and warmth to the character of Vesemir, who is such an integral part of our upcoming season.»
If Nightmare of the Wolf is a success, we can’t rule out another anime-style movie to help further bridge the gap between Vesemir’s training of a certain someone – more on that shortly – and the events of the Netflix series. If not, The Witcher might utilize some flashbacks to fill in some of the lost years between Nightmare of the Wolf and the ‘present day’ on The Continent.
Lore bits and future implications
Last but not least, there are also many passing references that are easily missable on a first watch, but serve to enrich the universe and establish Nightmare of the Wolf against the backdrop of the greater history of The Witcher.
King Dagread of Kaedwen and his great-great-granddaughter Calanthe
Would you have guessed that the moustache-twirling King Dagread of Kaedwen is a direct ancestor of Ciri’s? Dagread’s grandaughter Ellen married King Corbett of Cintra and together they had a son they named Dagorad, after his grandfather. Dagorad was eventually succeeded by his only child and heiress Calanthe and the rest is history. While Ciri has little in common with her notoriously absent-minded forebear, her full name is Cirilla Fiona Ellen Riannon, in honor of several illustrous ancestors, on of which hailed from Kaedwen.
We also get to see a few characters that will feature in the upcoming second season of The Witcher. Namely, the childhood versions of Geralt, Eskel, Lambert, and Remus (the witcher who died in episode three of Season One). This of course seamlessly blends into Season Two, where we’ll hopefully get to see much more of the now grown-up witchers, their aging father, and the bond they share.
Above: the young witchers in Nightmare of the Wolf. Below: Remus in Season One
Finally, many of you are probably curious if we’ll ever get to see the little elven girl Filavandrel rescued from Tetra again. Like Kitsu, she has been subjected to mutagenic experiments, but the consequences are left unclear. Does this story have a happy ending or will Vesemir eventually have to make good on his promise to hunt her down? What are the effects of her mutations? Is she perhaps someone we’ve already seen or are yet to see in The Witcher series?
Questions that need answering. For now, we may have to settle for a bit of speculating. At least until The Witcher Season Two drops on December 17!

‘The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf’ Ending Explained
During the final moments of the movie, Lady Zerbst (Mary McDonnell), whose real name is Illyana and was Vesemir’s love interest before he left to be a Witcher, sending him and Tetra to kill a demon called Kitsu. After an epic fight sequence, Kitsu managed to evade them as Veremis and Tetra reach a dungeon where they see the skeletons of Elves that have been killed by Kitsu. Vesemir finds his friend Filavandrel (Tom Canton) tied up inside the dungeon and it is later found that Kitsu is a breed of two species, created by the mages of Kaer Morhen.Veremis doesn’t believe a word coming from Tetra’s mouth and they suddenly discover that an Elf is still alive. Tetra was going to kill her, but Filavandrel saves her and take her away. Before leaving, he says he will kill her if it is found that she has become evil. It was at that moment, we get to know about Tetra’s reality and how she’s helping Kitsu in her endeavor of wiping out the Witchers.

Veremis reaches Kaer Morhen and finds out that Degnal is indeed making new monsters with the help of the mage so that Witchers never go unemployed. They start fighting each other and are stopped by the mage. Lady Zerbst also reaches there and tells them that Tetra is the enemy and she is here with a lot of people who also want to end the Witchers. Vesemir tries to reason with Tetra, but she doesn’t take a step back. Kitsu helps her in bringing hundreds of creatures to the war and they start attacking the Witchers. They make a plan and start taking them head-on. Meanwhile, Lady Zerbst goes into the basement with other kids and hides there when one of the kids says that they can get out of here from the back. The children leave Kaer Morhen as Vesemir and Tetra come face to face. On the other hand, all the other Witchers are being massacred and killed gruesomely.

As soon as Vesemir was going to attack her, Kitsu pulls a magic trick on him and shows him what he can do to stay with Illyana. The dreams show Vesemir and Illyana leading a happy life, even having a child together. Soon Vesemir understands that this is all a dream and manages to break free. Showing his true powers, he kills all the knights present in the room and kills Tetra as well before piercing Kitsu’s stomach with his sword. In a shocking turn of events, it turns out that it was a magical spell by Tetra and the lady he killed was actually Illyana.Tetra believes that she has won the war and was about the kill him, but dying Degnal reaches there on time to destroy the lady warrior. Degnal tells Vesemir that he should find the kids and make them Witcher, but most importantly good human beings. He takes Illyana close to a lake and makes her sit as he sits beside her. She sees the gorgeous views and takes her last breath which makes Vesemir really emotional.
Tetra (voiced by Lara Pulver) in ‘The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf’ (Netflix)
The movie ends with Vesemir finding the four little boys and saying, “This is the last time I allow any of you to ever hesitate. Decide.” One of the boys replied, “But they hate us.” And that’s how we are introduced to Geralt for the first time. Responding to his query, Vesemir replies, “There will always be another monster, Geralt’.The movie has a befitting conclusion and leaves no room for a sequel or anything. But it would be great to see how Vesemir trained Geralt in future projects. ‘Nightmare of the Wolf’ is everything that fans hoped for. It doesn’t just give viewers a good story, but also gives them a context as to why Veremis is so important in Geralt’s life.
Introduction of Geralt (Netflix)
‘The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf’ will be streaming exclusively on Netflix on Monday, August 23, at 3 am EST.
1 Tragic Love
A major subplot of the movie revolves around Vesemir’s relationship with Illyana, his childhood love. When they meet again, Illyana is already 70, and Vesemir looks much younger than her. Yet, they still briefly rekindle their romance before Illyana dies.
Unfortunately for Vesemir, his relationship with Illyana similar to his romance with Countess de Mignole from The Witcher 3. He and the Countess also met when they were young (Vesemir was already a Witcher by then) but were forced to separate despite their affection for each. And just like with Vesemir and Illyana, this romance also had a tragic end. It seems poor Vesimir is doomed to this fate.
What Happened to Geralt and the Rest of the Trainees after the battle of Kaer Morhen?
Geral of Rivia was seen in the series as a trainee witcher during the starting of the battle.
Illyana helped the young witchers to hide while the battle was going on. She showed them an exit path by which Geralt managed to escape with the rest of the trainees.
Vesemir later managed to find Geralt and the rest of the trainees and made them an offer that he will train all of them to become a Witcher and rebuild the school from scratch.
But as Reidrich and his acolytes are dead now, so there is no one with the knowledge of alchemy, so to build the school and train the trainees to become Witchers, Vesemir now had to find a new mage who will be able to accomplish this, so he starts to look for a new mage for the school.
The series ends with Geralt and the trainees starting fresh with Vesemir as their new mentor and headmaster.
More stories related to the great Kaer Morhen will be followed in the upcoming Witcher Season 2, where we might expect to see Vesemir’s flashback as Geralt’s mentor.

Geralt’s cameo in Nightmare of the Wolf
A bald child is seen sporadically throughout Nightmare of the Wolf. One of four children to escape Kaer Morhen after its collapse, the movie’s closing moments reveal that the kid is, in fact, Geralt. He’s even handed his own medallion by Vesemir.
What happens in the intervening years between then and The Witcher is likely to be the subject of much speculation. Given Ciri’s chance to train under the witchers in Kaer Morhen in the upcoming second season of The Witcher, expect some parallels (and maybe even some flashback scenes) to be drawn between Ciri’s struggles and Geralt’s own upbringing under Vesemir.
Nightmare of the Wolf, then, is an essential companion piece to The Witcher. It presents the moment where Geralt falls under Vesemir’s wing, as well as why the witchers are so greatly feared and are in a state of disarray by Geralt’s time. It’s even introduced a new leading figure in Vesemir – who we should find out more about on December 17.

The witchers’ dark secret
Much of Nightmare of the Wolf’s latter half revolves around the hunt for Kitsu, a strange and mutated hybrid human-kahr creature who was found to be kidnapping and experimenting on children.
But that idea didn’t come out of a vacuum. As Vesemir, Tetra, and Filavandarel’s investigations converge, the truth on the mutations come to light.
Kitsu is the product of «mutagenic alchemy», described as a secret «known only to the mages of Kaer Morhen.» In short, witchers have been creating their own monsters to help create a self-perpetuating need for witchers. After all, no monsters, then witchers become redundant.
Vesemir confronts his mentor Deglan, who confirms he was the mastermind behind the whole plot.
For Deglan, the scheme was a way to stop the world of men from wiping out the witchers. «The only thing keeping men from hunting us,» he says, «are the scarier beasts we keep away.»
The two clash and are quickly interrupted by Tetra, Kitsu, and their combined forces. In the ensuing battle, Deglan is mortally wounded. With his finally words, he recants his past actions and tells Vesemir to make the current crop of kids in Kaer Morhen “better men.”
The brutal lineage of witchers is broken. In its place, a slightly more considerate one, led by Vesemir. It remains to be seen just how the bunch of monster slayers will co-exist moving forward in The Witcher season 2 (multiple School of the Wolf alumni are confirmed to appear, including Lambert), but here marks a major divergence in how they treat those willing to become witchers.
It also marks the moment where men – rightly or wrongly – will have a far greater suspicion of witchers. It’s fair to say that their golden era, upon Deglan’s demise, is now over. Vesemir, Geralt, and others will have to go to considerable lengths to make up for the foul plot concocted in the bowels of Kaer Morhen – and all the lives it cost. It’s a dark history that is likely to hang over them for some time to come. And it all started here.
How the Netflix Witcher Series Homaged the Steamy Meme
Though Netflix’s Witcher adaptation is based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s many novels and short stories, the show does throw a bone to those who’ve played the Witcher video game trilogy by including scenes of Geralt and Yennifer in the bathtub.
Henry Cavil admirers couldn’t help but swoon as the chiseled actor soaked in the tub on screen as he portrayed Geralt, a knowing gesture by showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. “We see you too. We know you’re here,” Hissrich assured video game fans. An avid gamer himself, Cavil was thrilled to throw a wink at fellow fans by lounging in the meme-worthy bathtub.
When Does Nightmare of the Wolf Take Place?
Let’s get our bearings with Geralt (played by Henry Cavill). The White Wolf was an active witcher throughout the 13th century. So that’s our starting time point we know for a fact. We also know that the assault on Kaer Morhen took place in the second half of the 12th century. That means it happened somewhere around 1150 to 1200. And since Geralt was born in 1160 and — spoiler — makes an appearance in this movie, we can assume that the assault of Kaer Morhen took place around 1170.
That means Nightmare of the Wolf likely takes place about 50 years before Geralt’s timeline in The Witcher Season 1. When it comes to Ciri’s Season 1 storyline, Nightmare of the Wolf happened roughly 62 to 65 years prior.
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf Ending Explained: What Happened to Illyana, Deglan, Reidrich, and Deglan?
Reidrich, Deglan, Tetra, and Illyana all died in the battle of Kaer Morhen.
After Tetra arrives at Kare Morhen; Vesemier first confronts Deglan and Reidrich about their crimes committed and by which they agreed that they had created the hybrids.
Illyana, by that time, goes to the Wither headquarters and decides to hide the young witcher trainees until the battle is over.
Tetra, in the meantime, teleports the Kitsu-Mahr hybrid and all other hybrids that the Witchers created in front of the castle, and the fight begins in front of the castle.
In the battle, all the witchers are killed except for Vesemir.
The Witcher Nightmare of the Wolf: Theo James as Vesemir and Lara Pulver as Tetra (Pic Credit: Netflix)
The Kitsu-Mahr hybrid then, by using her magic, makes Vesemir kill Reidrich and, at the same time, wound Illyana by making Vesemir believe that he is fighting her and Tetra.
Deglan, on the other hand, in the dying moments, also manages to put a fatal blow on Tetra, which kills Tetra. Deglan also dies later on due to his injuries.
At the end of the battle, Vesemir leaves Kaer Morhen with injured Illyana, Vesemir wanted to kill the hybrid, but Illyana made him think otherwise and requests him to spare the hybrid’s life.
Vesemir, after carrying injured Illyana, stops in front of a frozen lake and, using his magic, makes the lake warm and spends their last moments together.
Illyana soon passes away in Vesemir’s arms. Vesemir, for the first time, grieves for the passing of someone.
The Kaer Morhen – Rissberg parallel
Early on in Nightmare of the Wolf, we learn that all is not well in the realm of Kaedwen, the mountainous kingdom that hosts the ancient Witcher fortress of Kaer Morhen. Our hero Vesemir sets on a path that sees him unravel a terrible secret, threatening the very foundations of everything he holds dear: Some witchers and mages (namely Deglan and Reidrich) have started to breed monsters of their own in an effort to forestall their extinction.
Mages in the laboratory of Kaer Morhen
This is not done purely for coin but primarily out of concern for the witchers’ own survival. As Vesemir’s mentor Deglan (Graham McTavish) puts it:
If the idea of artificially created monsters seems familiar, it may be because you’ve read a similar story before. In Season of Storms, Andrzej Sapkowski’s tie-in novel, Geralt intrudes upon a team of renegade mages, involved in illegal experiments at Rissberg Castle. Overseen by Grandmaster Ortolan (a particularly ancient and catankerous sorcerer), the experiments result in the most horrid abominations imaginable, and inevitably a few of the specimen escape or so it seems.
Grandmaster Ortolan, Artwork by Maxim Kozlov
Given the obvious parallel, we can’t help but thinking that Nighmare of the Wolf writer Beau DeMayo based the film’s biggest twist on the events of Season of Storms.
Both cases play heavily with the theme of prejudice and fear. In Season of Storms, the Brotherhood of Sorcerers worries that Ortolan’s doings could turn public opinion against them. In Nightmare of the Wolf, the witchers’ attempt at securing their survival ultimately proves to be their downfall when an angry mob assembles at the gates of Kaer Morhen.
3 The Three New Witchers
Before the massacre at Kaer Morhen, a lot of new Witchers were trained. When the older Witchers talk about who will survive the trials, Vesemir thinks that Lambert, Eskel, and maybe Remus will make it. (Funnily enough, he doesn’t mention Geralt.) All The Witcher fans know that Lambert and Eskel indeed make it, and became Geralt’s friends. However, Remus meets his untimely end when a striga kills him.
There’s also an interesting connection between the name Remus and the Witcher School of the Wolf. Some may will recall the legend of Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome who were supposedly nurtured by a she-wolf as children, hence the name.
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf Review: Should We Watch It Or Skip It?
We have enjoyed the series very much and recommend that whoever reads this article stream the series as it is available exclusively on Netflix.
Theo James’ performance as Vesemir has been excellent, plus Lara Pulver’s character as Tetra and Mary McDonnell’s character as Lady Zerbst has been beautifully portrayed, which we enjoyed fully while watching.
The series comprises memorable dialogues and some excellent fight scenes, which will satisfy the viewers for sure. Plus, as the series is animated, some of the combat moves Vesemir portrayed excellently would have been difficult to pull off if the series had been live-action.
Plus, the story is fast-paced; although it had some gaps, it comes across the show’s main plot by the end. So we enjoyed The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf and will recommend you to stream it as well. That’s all for now; for more such interesting topics, please stay tuned to MediaScrolls.
The fall of Kaer Morhen
Kaer Morhen is all but razed to the ground by Nightmare of the Wolf’s end. Fire engulfs much of the fortress, and the remaining children are forced to flee – with Vesemir being the last remaining senior witcher.
Those familiar with the books and games might not be too surprised by its fate. A journal entry in one of The Witcher games refers to a siege that wiped out all but a handful of witchers.
In essence, Nightmare of the Wolf’s ending acts as a reset button for the group of mutated monster hunters. Vesemir remains, and a few might have been scattered to the winds. That positions Vesemir as someone who will need to shed his cocky demeanour and, instead, lead the witchers away from their home and into an uncertain future.
At the very least, we know they eventually return to Kaer Morhen. The Witcher season 2 is confirmed to include what will likely be the mangled ruins of the one-time stronghold. Expect a cobbled collection of witchers, including Vesemir, to continue the legacy of the witchers while Geralt has struck out on his own.
Tetra’s ‘Monstrum’
Tetra Gilcrest is perhaps the one character who remains an enigma, leaving us with more questions than answers. She is established as a sorceress harboring a deadly grudge against the witchers, often taking a stance against the more moderate Lady Zerbst in Kaedwen’s court. The reasons for her disdain are only partially explored at the end of the movie. While she has her mind set on vengeance, it’s left ambiguous whether there is more that drives her.
Tetra Gilcrest
We know that she values her ancestry, as a direct descendants of one of the first human mages of the Continent? Who was that mage though and why is it important? We know that she embraces purity, but is that just a public front to serve her agenda or does she really believe that witchers are ‘true diabolic creations fit only for killing’
Speaking of which, the pamphlets signed and circulated by Tetra and her disciples are an abbreviated version of a passage from the book Monstrum, or Description of the Witcher. In the books, this work by an anonymous author is seen as instrumental in the downfall of Kaer Morhen, fanning the flames of anti-witcher propaganda and instigating a violent mob to march on Kaer Morhen.
While the author behind Monstrum remained anonymous, it is believed to be the work of an unknown mage. Nightmare of the Wolf offers its own explanation and although it is never explicitly stated, we can safely assume that it was Tetra, who first wrote the infamous lines.
What Was the Assault of Kaer Morhen?
More On:
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf
Fans of Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels know that the assault of Kaer Morhen happened but they don’t know why. Basically in the second half of the 12th century, an army of men attacked the witcher threshold. This battle wiped out most of the witchers, leaving Vesemir as the last fully trained witcher on The Continent. And since Vesemir was never trained about how to make the potions that turn apprentices into witchers, this conflict threatened to erase witchers permanently from The Continent.
As you may have guessed, this battle was a huge deal. It was also something we knew shockingly little about due to Sapkowski’s guarded way of writing. At least that was the case until Nightmare of the Wolf. This Netflix original reveals — again, spoiler — that it was actually Tetra who led the attack against Kaer Morhen and the witchers. The sorceress and the army behind her only targeted them because the elder witchers, including Deglan, had been experimenting on people and elves to transform them into monsters. More monsters mean more jobs which means more money. It was all a ploy to justify this profession, and Vesemir knew nothing about it.
Get ready for another spoiler because the answer to this one is yes. In the final moments of the movie, a boy with golden eyes and a shaved head takes a silver wolf medallion from a bloody pile. That bald kid is none other than baby Geralt. And now he knows that there will always be another monster.
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf-What is the truth Behind the Hybrids, and Why were they created?
These Hybrids were created during ancient times to fight off elves and the Old Races.
Reidrich, the head mage of the Witchers at Kaer Morhen and his acolytes, already knew the secret behind the hybrids, and they were safeguarding those secrets for a long time had mastered the process of alchemy. (Alchemy is a process by which ordinary human beings are turned into Witcher)
So as the Witchers were hunting those monsters for more than 100 years, the number of monsters had diminished over time, and because of this, Deglan came up with a plan to make new monsters by engineering new species.
As a result, Reidrich created the hybrids between Kitsu and Mahr, which later made monsters out of her imagination out of the 11 girls she kidnapped.
Although these experiments were unsuccessful, Vesemir and Tetra find the remains of the unfortunate 11 girls who died.
Tetra also finds out that the Kitsu-Mahr hybrid is still alive and convinces the creature to join her in a fight to seek vengeance against the Witchers.
It is also revealed that a Witcher had killed Tetra’s mother previously by accusing her of stealing.
Tetra soon returns to Ard Carraigh and explains to King everything related to the Witchers’ crimes for several years.
Shortly after that, King first orders Luka to be executed and then sends out Tetra with the soldiers and her followers to Kaer Morhen to confront Deglan and Reidrich.

Here is the ending of ‘Nightmare of the Wolf: The Witcher’ explained in detail:
Vesemir’s determination
The first introduction of young Vesemir in “Nightmare of the Wolf” is when he is clumsily helping his dad perform an exorcism on a lady. While retrieving the donkey to complete his task of buying blue gum, he meets the mischievous Illyana who is assigned to look after him. In a conversation with her, young Vesemir reveals his desire to leave the village and explore the world.
After stealing the herbs for the lady and buying a honey cake with the money they had, the duo ends up meeting a drunk man. Delgan, the drunken man, threatens to reveal their theft unless the children take him to the noblewoman.
Delgan exorcises the victim with Vesemir who decides to stay behind for the ritual. As the Witcher is leaving, young Vesemir expresses to leave but is denied.
After a fight with Illyana about his aspirations to become a Witcher, Vesemir leaves the village in the dead of the night. And thus starts training to become one.
To achieve the title of a Witcher, young Vesemir has to go through trials that include surviving the monster-infused forest without proper protection. Upon his survival, he is given an injection of magical serums that enhances his abilities that are essential for the craft.
The discovery of mutated monsters
Upon the King’s agreement to Lady Zerbst’s suggestion, it is revealed that she is actually Vesemir’s childhood friend and once lover, Illyana. We also learn that it was, indeed, Vesemir who killed the leshen in the beginning.
Vesemir and Titra leave for the quest together, much to their dismay. During a rest stop, Titra narrates a story about how the first Witcher came into being.
They then find an illusion so powerful that it shocks themleading to a fight with Kitsu, an elf, and a monster companion. After the latter is dead, Kitsu escapes but not before getting injured by Vesemir’s knife.
To their utter confusion, Vesemir discovers the scent of a Mahr on the knife that stabbed Kitsu. On their hunt for the runaway elf, the duo finds his hideout reeking of dead female elves. They also find Vesemir’s elf acquaintance tied up.
While exploring the hideout, they find Mahr’s essence on an experiment table. The same smell that Vesemir found on his knife. The unique elf, Kitsu, was infused with Mahr abilities.
After poking around a bit, they realise that only mages have the ancient knowledge of genetics and cross-breeding. Hence, it is revealed that the Witchers, themselves, have been engineering new monsters to survive and earn more money.
The Uprising
Lady Titra Gilcrest, a witch, never hides her hatred of Witchers, as they are not pure like her but magically enhanced. According to her, Witchers are selfish and money-hungry. Her hunches are proven right after the discovery of Kitsu’s lair.
This enables the Pure Witch to further her agenda of Witcher abomination. With the permission of an enraged King, Titra gets a go for her plan to end the monster hunters once and for all. In cahoots with the one of a kind elf, Kitsu, she combines their powers for the uprising.
Overwhelmed by their own creation’s power, the Witchers struggle to survive and give their all to the fight. In a surprising display of manipulative powers, Kitsu gets into Vesemir’s mind with all the what-ifs he wanted with his first love Illyana or Lady Zerbst.
Overcoming the illusions, Vesemir ends up killing Titra and her companions in rage, only to find out that even his fight was a veil of a manipulative sham. Instead of the pure witch, he had stabbed Illyana and murdered his fellow Witcher companions.
In his moments of sadness, Titra goes to kill Vesemir but is killed by Delgan. After his mentor’s insistence, Vesemir sweeps Illyana off the ground and takes her to the lakeside. Lady Zebrest’s last moment is in front of her dream place.
With only four boys who escaped on Illyana’s insistence as survivors, Vesemir takes up the responsibility to make them Witchers. The animated prequel “The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf” ends with Vesemir giving a young Gerald and the rest of the kids their necklaces.

Nightmare of the Wolf’s Bathtub Vesemir Will Carry the Torch
After the fans relished in Netflix’s generous bathtub content, it seems the tradition is set to continue in the upcoming animated film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. The new Witcher story is set before Geralt’s time as a hunter, but the film will introduce more eye candy in the form of the strapping young Witcher Vesemir. The charming swashbuckler eventually becomes Geralt’s trusted mentor and father figure, but his Nightmare of the Wolf will show his journey before he takes on this role.
From the teaser trailer alone, it’s easy to say young Vesemir will give Geralt a run for his money in the hunk department, especially considering how he looks as he’s living it up in a bathtub of his own. It doesn’t help that the studly Vesemir is voiced by Theo James, who’s played love interest roles many a time in live-action media, such as the heartthrob Four in the Divergent series, as well as the handsome love interest Sidney Parker in the period drama Sanditon. His dreamy voice, met with sexy Bathtub Vesemir, is undoubtedly going to inspire much blushing among viewers.
Bathtub Vesemir will make his debut in The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf on Netflix August 23.
A stacked cast and a few surprises
Before we dive into the more contextual references, let’s quickly bring some attention to the stellar voice acting that carries Nightmare of the Wolf. We’ve known for a while, that Theo James (Castlevania) will return following his brief line in The Witcher Season One, and he brings Vesemir to life as he once was: young, suave and wise-cracking.
Theo James as Vesemir
Rounding up the main cast are Lara Pulver (Sherlock) as Tetra Gilcrest, Graham McTavish (Outlander, The Hobbit) as Deglan, and Mary McDonnell (Donnie Darko) as Lady Zerbst. Whether it’s the icy sorceress full of surpressed emotions, the aging witcher mentor, who sees his life’s work come crumbling down, or the quick-witted noblewoman, who rose to the top of the court – they all play their roles convincingly.
For many, one of the biggest surprises was the return of Tom Canton‘s Filavandrel, the elven king Geralt meets in Season One. In Nightmare of the Wolf, Canton delivers in showing us a younger version of Filavandrel, more subtle, caring and not yet as embittered.
Tom Canton returns as Filavandrel
In other prominent roles we have Jennifer Hale (Mass Effect) as Vesemir’s childhood companion Illyana, David Errigo Jr. (Ridley Jones) as Young Vesemir, Matthew Yang King (Love, Death & Robots) as the witcher Luka, Kari Wahlgren (Mortal Kombat) as Kitsu, Keith Ferguson (Final Fantasy XII) as Reidrich, and Adam Croasdell (Supernatural) as King Dagread of Kaedwen.
Last but not least, you will have noticed that we briefly see a young Geralt towards the end of the movie. If you haven’t read the credits yet, it may surprise you that he is voiced by Harry Hissrich, the son of The Witcher‘s own showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich.
Who Is Vesemir in The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf?
Witcher fans already know this name and love this character. Vesemir is another witcher who acted as Geralt’s mentor. Nightmare of the Wolf follows a younger version of Vesemir (voiced by Theo James) as he recalls his own witcher training and faces a threat that will change the fate of his brothers-in-arms for generations to come.
In the novels, Vesemir is known as the oldest and most experienced member of the witcher keep Kaer Morhen. Once Geralt takes Ciri to Kaer Morhen, he takes on a grandfatherly role, often caring more about Ciri’s wellbeing rather than her training. But as this movie shows, his soft underbelly is the other side of a fearless warrior.
Vesemir is old enough to have seen the building of Kaer Morhen in the 11th century. Brough to the keep by Deglan (voiced by Graham McTavish), Vesemir was another child claimed by the Law of Surprise. Once he grew older Vesemir became one of the few members of the School of the Wolf to survive the assault on Kaer Morhen. By the 1260s, he was the last fully fledged witcher to survive. Nightmare of the Wolf will show exactly what happened to the witchers on that fateful day.

7 Vesemir Likes To Get Clean
A Witcher’s life means spending a lot of time in forests, sewers, and other places where people can easily get dirty. So when Vesemir gets the chance to enjoy a bit of luxury, he decides to take a bath. The scene will be familiar to all fans who either played The Witcher 3, or saw the Netflix show.
In both cases, Geralt takes a bath in a fashion similar to Vesemir, so it’s possible it was Vesemir of all people who instilled this habit in Geralt. Another interesting similarity is that neither is alone when they take the bath. Vesemir is with Filavandrel, while Geralt is with Yennefer with the game and with Jaskier in the show.
