As for the gameplay, it would be your regular JRPG with its own distinct style as you battle using your Personas in the human psyche of others.

If you are a big anime fan, you will definitely enjoy Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Strikers, which are currently on Steam.

Persona 5 Strikers is a sequel to Persona 5, so you would have to play Persona 5 first before playing it. However, Persona 5 Strikers is sort of an experimental game as it switched from its usual turn-based RPG to a hack-and-slash game.

Disco Elysium returns to the absolute fundamentals of tabletop RPGs. It’s all about playing a role and becoming your character and embracing whatever success or failure that entails. Your predetermined protagonist is a detective who wakes up after an amnesia-inducing bender without a badge, gun, or a name. As the detective, you’ll attempt to solve a murder in the retro city of Revachol while also solving the mystery of your past and identity. 

There is no combat, at least not in the way you’d expect of a classically-inspired RPG. Instead, the majority of Disco Elysium takes place in conversation either with characters you need to interview about the murder or with your own mind. Each of your skills in Disco Elysium are parts of your personality with opinions on what to say and do during your investigation. Empathy will helpfully clue you in to the feelings of people you talk to so you can better understand them while Logic will help you poke holes in a bad alibi or understand a clue you find. Investing in skills helps you pass dice roll skill checks all throughout the game for everything from kicking down a door to hitting on a woman at the hotel. It’s a massive RPG with clever writing where each playthrough is significantly different based on the kind of detective you choose to play.

In Bleak Faith: Forsaken, you’re put into a world where only pockets of humanity are left. Within the Omnistructure, not everything is as it appears. You’ll need to be careful with how you move, how you fight, and what you explore if you wish to make it out alive.

Tough fights await you as you explore. You must be sure-footed and aim for the enemy’s weak spots to take them down. Even when you know how to beat them, doing so will be difficult.

Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars 2 is a classic MMO with great combat

Guild Wars 2 has hybrid action-target combat that falls somewhere between World of Warcraft’s and Tera’s systems.

GW2 has tab-targeting but it also has action mechanics that allow players to dodge. Timing is an important part of combat as well. Attacks may miss if you don’t perform them at the right time. Some attacks may also be intercepted by standing in the way of their route.

Stealth does not always prevent you from taking damage as attacks can also hit invisible players. GW2 has one of the most engaging MMORPG combat systems.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Pick a direction and run. You’re almost guaranteed to discover some small adventure, some small chunk of world that will engage you. It’s that density of things to do that makes Skyrim so constantly rewarding. A visit to the Mage’s Guild will turn into an area-spanning search for knowledge. A random chat with an NPC will lead you to a far-off dungeon, hunting for a legendary relic. You could be picking berries on the side of a mountain and discover a dragon.

And if you somehow run out of things to do, rest assured that modders have more waiting for you (check out our guide to the best Skyrim mods). That lively community has kept Skyrim in the Steam top 100 since its release, and given us endless ways to adventure through a great world. Some on the PC Gamer team keep a modded-up Skyrim install handy, just in case they feel like adventure. That’s some high praise.

Diablo 4

It’s not even a year old and Diablo 4 already has a complicated and controversial history. The aim of Blizzard’s sequel is to take the Diablo formula and tie it directly into the live service hooks so popular today. And… let’s just say it’s not been a flawless process. The season one launch was a disaster: turning a game already criticised for how grindy it felt into a slog that fans rebelled against.

But a live service game lives and dies on its most recent release, and the second season has been much better—even going so far as to fix many of the complaints we had with the game’s launch. Levelling is faster, inventory management is less of a hassle, and good, useful loot is easier to come by. For now then, Diablo 4 gets a home in its list—its worth checking out, even if just for a campaign that’s much darker and more gruesome than that of Diablo 3. Hopefully future seasons will continue the positive momentum of this latest release.

Neverwinter

Neverwinter is set in the legendary Forgotten Realms setting

Neverwinter, a Dungeons & Dragons action MMO has fast-paced and fun combat. The developers did a great job adapting D&D mechanics to create an engaging combat system, although the system is pretty far from traditional pen & paper combat.

Neverwinter has active targeting. The reticle on the screen shows where the attacks will land. Using the mouse, players aim the reticle over enemies to hit them with their abilities. Some abilities have cooldowns, others can be spammed at will.

At first, it doesn’t look too complicated but don’t forget that Neverwinter has D&D roots. Mastering combat and understanding how the attributes come into play will take some time.

Scarlet Nexus

Scarlet Nexus is one of the newest entries on the list. It is more fast-paced because it is an action RPG instead of the traditional turn-based JRPGs. Its greatest strength is its combat system which has unlimited replayability.

With the discovery of a psionic hormone in the human brain, humans now possess extraordinary sensory abilities.

The game draws similarities to the Astral Chain game on the Nintendo Switch as it uses the same plot elements.

The fluid combat system and unique art style mix well with the amazing soundtrack and story. The dual story experience adds more replayability as you can experience the playthrough in two different ways.

If you went on an anime game marathon and want a switch from your typical PC JRPGs, Scarlet Nexus is definitely the best choice for a change of pace.

#4 Diablo IV

The darker tone and art style should satiate fans that were unhappy with Diablo III‘s Warcraft-like aesthetic. Additionally, it is the first truly open world installment in the series. Since it has released, the developers have supported it with seasonal content which means you’ll be sticking around into the Sanctuary for a long time to come. Prepare to spend countless hours clearing dungeons, making new builds, and battling off demonic scum.
